Leveraging Western Australia iron ore port stockpile measurements to better trade in the iron ore and shipping market.

DBX is excited to announce the release of real-time estimates for FMG Anderson Point Port Hedland iron ore stockpiles!

FMG stockpiles have been quite volatile, fluctuating between 2 and 5.5 million tonnes since we began measurements in January 2022. What is interesting about this time series is its correlation with iron ore shipping flows from the FMG terminal. This makes sense, as, for instance, an increase in iron ore stockpiles will lead to more ships being loaded. The relationship between the two also needs to have a lag, as iron ore stockpiles cannot be loaded automatically; ships need to be fixed and brought to the port to load the mineral.

Our analysis reveals a 40% correlation between stockpile fluctuations and shipping flows in the next two weeks. This suggests that increases in inventories are likely to be followed by increases in shipping flows, offering key insights for market predictions.

We will soon be releasing information on all iron ore stockpiles in Western Australia, which ship around 75 million tonnes per month of iron ore, constituting 50% of the global seaborne supply.
