Despite a stronger economy, total Indian power generation remained around 148 TWh in October due to mild weather. However, dry weather led to a decrease in hydro power generation, dropping to 12.2 TWh. The power shortfall was met by coal power plants, reaching an all-time monthly high of 111.1 TWh, up by 7.8 TWh from September.
Indian coal prices, reported by customs, began rising from August into October. Thermal coal prices, mainly influenced by Indonesian sub-bituminous coal, show a slight uptick, while metallurgical coal prices are supported by tight Australian supply. DBX anticipates Indian imported coal prices in November to soften across the board in line with lower international prices.
